Truely a useful plant identifiction book

I have quite a few "nature" books on my shelf, and at least 5 on plant identification. I was a tad bit leary when I ordered this book, thinking that it would just become another dust gatherer. Boy was I wrong. It is one of the easiest reads I have ever seen on this subject. You do not have to have a degree in botany to get into, and begin to use the info in this book. It has rekindled my desire to learn more about the plant-life around me. If you live, and play outdoors in California, then I would definately recomend this book, and some of the recipes listed in this book really are to die for ( and I am not talking about the chapter on poisonous plant identification ).

Enjoyable and useful guide

As a former graduate student in botany I have almost 100 books on botany and plant identification, and this is one of the most fun and easiest to use guides that I have. It's not a rigorous guide, but it's not meant to be, since it focuses on the edible and useful plants of California. About a hundred species are covered, if I remember right (cut me some slack here since it's been awhile since I picked it up), and the notes on their herbal or culinary use, which I don't know as much about, increased my knowledge there.

This would probably be one of the best books for an amateur to get their feet wet identifying plants because it limits itself to one topic and many of the easier species to identify. Plus you'll learn about how various plants they have been used in the past and continue to be useful today.

For example, to mention just one, ceanothus, of which there are about 40 species in California, was used both as a tea substitute and tobacco substitute by the early settlers. And it's easily identifiable by the three prominent veins on the underside of the leaf, as well as the small, pretty clusters of violet flowers. Most of the 40 odd species are low growing herbs or bushes, but the largest species can be a 40 foot tall tree.

Overall, a fine book and one that imparts a lot of fun, useful information.

This book is quite thorough. There are pictures, but not as many as there could be to make the book excellent. Books that try to describe the differences between two plants that look alike, but one is poisonous and the other is a useful herb, should provide large numbers of color pictures.

The Devil's Arithmetic

I absolutely love this book. It is very sad, though, because you have to relive the Holocaust with the characters. Both the granddad and aunt survived the Holocaust with the loss of almost their whole family. The girl Hannah - which in Hebrew is Chaya - is invited to enjoy the festivities of Passover where Hannah's family also relived the horrid things that happened in the concentration camps/death camps. After Hannah opens the door to let the prophet Elijah in, she is in an alternate world! This is a great book because it has things that have most certainly happened, but the author adds a little twist to the book. This makes The Devil's Arithmetic very intriguing and gives a lot of suspense. I like it because it makes you think twice about what people have gone through. To conclude my review, I would like to say that this is a very good book, and I recommend it to anyone!

This book was givent to my daughter by my boss. She is a teacher and he thought it would be a good book to read to the children. It is a book about a Jewish-American girl who learns about her family and the holocaust. My heart is heavy when I read about such horrible times. History is such an important thing to install in our children.

I read this book when I was in the 7th grade and it sparked my interest in the Holocaust. I think it's a great book for middle schoolers to read to introduce them to the past and the seriousness of the Holocaust. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Loved it!

Warm and touching story about how sometimes family is made by the heart, not by blood.
I loved both Eve and Ben, they are both complex, seen and experienced more, when it comes to family, than most. They both carry their own scars, their issues, and get a crash course to some hidden ones they were not aware of.
Their dating isn't the most smooth and effortless romance you ever heard of. When I was reading about all the problems and turmoil they run into, I kept thinking this is the perfect guidebook to what not to say, ask, or do when dating! Also Ben's adorable daughter, and his lingering feelings for his ex-wife, cause even more issues.
But the big one comes, when they end up on the opposite sides of a murder case, and then start mirroring the suspects into their own lives, and their relationships.
This is a warm hearted story of a family, and two detectives, trying to find the light and normalcy in life, after their other daughter is found years after being kidnapped as a young kid. How this tragedy affects all of them, what are the consequences of it, and how the daughters find a surprising friendship, and then sisters in each other.
The family that forms at the end, some tight to each other by blood, but bound together by love and commitment to each other, filled with devotion and fondness for each other.
I loved this story, it is so easy to relate to the highly likeable characters, to the story of a hard life, and to the range of emotions, Ben and Eve goes through, while trying to find their footing in the world

Have always like JKJ. Interesting story

Have always like JKJ. Interesting story, but more and more, her dialogue is becoming annoyingly outdated. Some at Harlequin needs to step in and modernize things. "What say we go inside..?" Um, no. No one talks like that. "Let's go inside"

And the most cringe-worthy: "Tut tut". Just no. Never.

Otherwise the story is creative and heart-felt!

In Hope's Shadow by Janice Kay Johnson is the second book in the Two Daughters series. It is even better than the first book, Yesterday's Gone. JKJ is at her best with a complex plot full of wonderful characters, and one of the most terrifying villains she has painted in the guise of a handsome teenager. Read this during daylight hours, and beware of your neighbors.
