New Series

Tasha was 13 years old and hiding in a forest, waiting for her father, when she is attacked by the largest wolf she had ever seen. As she laid there waiting to die she is picked up by 2 men and transported to the Facility, where she has been held for 8 years when;
Jack, an old vampire has allowed himself to be captured to gain entrance to the facility meets Tasha when she is brought to him for him to feed. He finds out that not only is she a telepath but also a werewolf, a fact she denies as she has never changed even though the people at the facility has been trying to make her do so. They develop a bond and when he hears her being tortured he orders his men to raid the facility and he rescues her and takes her to meet Sebastian, the head of the local werewolf pack.
The story goes on as they try to find out who and what she is, who ordered her attacked and why and are there others like her.
This book, if it had been longer and developed the characters better would had received 5 stars instead of 4 as it was interesting and gripping and made me want to know much more about each person and what was happening. Maybe in the next book of the series. We will have to wait and see.

Which was mostly the problem, it was too short.

A longer story would have allowed more prior background and more character development. I'm not a big fan of novellas, I'd much rather sit down and read a full length book that satisfies me. That being said, it really wasn't bad as far as it went, and has an acceptable ending that will lead smoothly to the next installment.

Tasha is not a bad heroine if one takes into account her lack of worldly experience due to her incarceration. Jack the Vamp is the suitably sexy love interest, although Sebastian the Werewolf appears to be a fine future contender to round out a potential love triangle.

Spicy sex scenes, not for the young ones. Nothing really too unusual with the Telepath/Vampire/Werewolf scenario, but still nicely presented.

Quick and easy read.

Great Story! I wish it were longer.

I loved the heroine. She was spunky and not afraid to speak her mind even if it caused her trouble. Jack could have used a little more description as could Sebastian for that matter. The book was left without a clear ending so I am assuming there will be more. I hope so. I would really like to read more about these characters and get a little more back story on them and on the organization that held them hostage. The author has a very good writing style. The story kept my interest until the end. A very pleasant surprise for a free book.

Good but hard to read at times

This is a book on statistical mechanics written for physicists. While most books dedicate a chapter or so to the treatment of stat mech. of quantum systems, this book uses the statistics of quantum systems as its foundations. While this means that the reader must possess a very firm grounding in quantum, it does eliminate some 'problems' of stat mech. such as the Gibbs paradox. It also makes some of the derivations simpler because once the quantum version of a phenomenon has been derived, the classical limit generally follows immediately. This book is not an easy read. I found that the equations were not always well motivated in the text. Even so, there are usually references to previous equations that will help in the understanding of whatever the current section is covering. One thing that I really like about this book is that the equations are numbered by sections and only the equations that are referenced in the text are given labels so that you don't wind up with numbering that goes into the hundreds (I realize that this is purely a stylistic point but it makes a difference in the readability in my view). I did have a hard time following the chapters on phase transitions and critical phenomena, but after reading parts of Statistical and Thermal Physics: With Computer Applications, which has a very good treatment of this subject, I was able to come back and understand it a bit better. I also found the chapter on the stat mech. of the early universe quite interesting even if it seemed rather tangential to the rest of the book.

Unclear overall, with moments of nice derivations sprinkled in

I would not recommend this book for physicists. It felt more written for people with a chemistry background. To me, the topics were out of order and often emphasized the wrong things. They occasionally went into too much detail about something for no apparent reason but then left other topics out. The end-of-chapter problems are numerous (which is good), but often poorly worded or vaguely framed (bad).

The redeeming qualities of the book are the couple of pages on the grand canonical ensemble and the appendix that summarizes all the ensembles and equations.

I much prefer Kittel's treatment and Landau's conceptual explanations (and the Jacobian formalism).

The way the author writes can be very difficult to understand, and his explanations of the material are opaque. Also, the notation is often counter-intuitive. I am heavily relying on my professor's notes for my graduate stat mech course as well as my undergrad textbook because I do not find this text particularly helpful. I would not recommend buying it unless you absolutely need to.
