About the Author

John L. Worrall is Professor of Criminology and Program Head at the University of Texas at Dallas. A Seattle native, he received both his M.A. (criminal justice) and Ph.D. (political science) from Washington State University, where he graduated in 1999. From 1999 to 2006, he was a member of the criminal justice faculty at California State University, San Bernardino.� He joined University of Texas at Dallas in� the fall of 2006. Dr. Worrall has published articles and book chapters on a variety of topics, ranging from legal issues in policing to crime measurement. He is also the author or coauthor of numerous textbooks, including Introduction to Criminal Justice (with Larry J. Siegel, 13th ed., Cengage, 2012) and Criminal Procedure: From First Contact to Appeal (4th ed., Prentice Hall, 2013); coeditor of The Changing Role of the American Prosecutor (SUNY, 2009); and editor of the journal Police Quarterly.

Jennifer L. Moore is Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.� She obtained her B.A. in government from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and her J.D. with honors from Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia.� Prior to entering academics, Professor Moore practiced at a large law firm in Atlanta, Georgia.� Her legal practice included corporate litigation, antitrust litigation, and white-collar criminal defense.� Professor Moore has also published articles on a wide range of legal topics, with a specific focus on criminal-law issues.

The best legal book I have read

As a paralegal student, I have read many books to prepare for the paralegal world. This is the best book I have read so far. It is succinct and supported by the most relevant and current case law. This is a book you must have in order to be a properly balanced and well educated paralegal.

About the Author

Stephanie W. Jamison is Professor of Asian Languages and Cultures and of Indo-European Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has published widely in Indo-European and Indo-Iranian linguistics, poetics, and mythology and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Oriental Society.

Joel P. Brereton is Associate Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Texas, Austin. He has taught in both Religious Studies and Asian Studies programs and has written on the literature and religion of the Veda, especially the Rigveda and the early Upanishads, and on Vedic ritual.

Former translations were at best sketchy approximations to the Sanskrit text

First scholarly edition in English in over a hundred years. That says it all - and the publication of such a translation has been a greatly desired and long awaited event. Former translations were at best sketchy approximations to the Sanskrit text, and while it is admitted that no translation will fully reveal the meanings of the original in its written form, we are far better served by this one, based as it is on a long history of intense scholarship on the culture, language, and religion of the Vedic people, than ever we were previously. There is an 80+ page introduction giving the essence of contemporary scholarship and an overview of Vedic culture along with short accounts of each of the principle Vedic deities, and each hymn/poem has its own short introduction giving some view of the meaning, poetics, and ritual underpinnings involved. Of course, it is quite expensive, and many will still be adequately served for the price by Wendy Doniger's selections. But if you can afford it, this is the text to buy.

A landmark

I met Professor Brereton in 2005 as he was working on this translation...finally, it is here, the first member of the Indo-European literary tradition, translated, in full, in English. The translators, Joel Brereton and Stephanie Jamison, are masters of this complex language and material and one could thus hardly imagine a better team to produce this long awaited translation. Though I have not read the entire translation yet, in reading prominent hymns, my sense is that the result is excellent and we profit greatly from a combination of ample introductory materials, introductions to briefly set up each hymn, as well as fresh renderings of the hymns themselves. Without doubt this is THE standard translation and will likely remain so just as long as its previous English incarnation - some 100 years.

Very good book to learn about Redmine plugins development

I'm the creator of SpentTime Plugin for Redmine> along other private plugins I've written for the company I work at, so I know a bit about Redmine's plugins.

The book is very easy and fast to read, with a plain and direct language that tries to explain every aspect of Redmine's plugin development. The book is short,
so you shouldn't expect most of it, so don't expect learning anthing about Redmine or Ruby on Rails because it isn't the goal of the book. It seems obvious but
this is not a book for novices on Ruby on Rails applications, you must know how this apps works to develop extensions for Redmine because you'll have to know
how Redmine works as well.

"The good things of the book"
There are several good things in this book, first of all the direct and plain language. The book is thought as a large tutorial from the beginning to the end.
You could do a new plugin step by step. And it explains the most important parts of Redmine's plugins as hooks, permissions & security or how to do new models
searchables. The explanation of hooks is the most important part of the book, very worthwhile to read.

Also I like the permissions & security section and the importance the author gives to the testing side of the development. In this last section you'll find
valuables ideas about testing and continuous integration (CI) tools like Travis (CI).

"The bad parts of the book2
Also this book have some bad things... although not too bad. First of all it tries to explain the development of plugins using as example another plugin (KnowledgeBase),
but you must refer to GitHub repository to see the code examples, so you need a browser if you want to see the code. That is not very important for all people, but
I think sometimes is good to have the code in the book so you don't need to browse any page.

Another missing aspect about plugins is the internazionalization. The book covers basic aspects of the development like 'Bundle' that are common to every Ruby on
Rails application, so treating things as internazionalization is a must too... I know it because most of the contributions to my public plugin has been translations...
although it's very easy to do, it should have been covered in the book.

"Conclusion"
"Redmine Plugin Extension and Development" is a very good book for everyone that wants to write extensions for Redmine. After reading this book I planned some changes
on the plugins I've wrote because I've learned very interesting things from it. You can read it in less than a week in your spare time, so it isn't a lost time.

Concise, Easy to Read, Covers the Important Bits. Basic Ruby/Rails experience will help, but manageable even without experience

This book highlights the authors perspective on building a plugin from his experiences building the Knowlegebase plugin for Redmine. It covers he basics as well as some of the interesting aspects you’ll likely need like hooking into Redmine itself and working with permissions along with several other aspects you may or may not need (e.g. file attachments, integrating with the activity stream, modifying views, etc.). The end of the book wraps up with a quick overview of writing tests, although it’s more overview than something as comprehensive as the other parts of the book.

Who this Book Works Well For

This book is well written for most beginning audiences. It doesn't have extra fluff and get’s straight to the point. It’s concise almost like a cookbook, but still reads well if you like casual perusal. Basically anyone wanting to build a Redmine plugin will probably get something out of it.

What This Book Isn't

This is not a book to take a beginner to Redmine and Ruby into developing Redmine plugins without some effort. You won’t get by very easily if you don’t have a basic knowledge of Ruby and preferably of Rails. You will likely have to pull information from other sources or stumble around yourself a bit. That said it’s something manageable as the concepts and ideas underlying everything are pretty easy to figure out, and the book does seem to take you gently through the Rails aspects.

If you are looking for a book in this niche of development and/or are developing a new Redmine plugin this is a great one to have at hand. It’ll save a bunch of time and effort sieving various documentation especially for some of the nuances you run into with normal plugin development.

Science goeth before the fall

If you want a succinct primer on money and inflation look no further. Irving Fisher (1867-1947) packs a load into 245 pages of "The Money Illusion." Especially helpful are the definitions of "absolute" and "relative" inflation. The two are usually found together, Fisher notes. This has lead to the dropping of the terms "absolute" and "relative" in latter-day discussions of inflation, resulting in much confusion.
Fisher is among the fathers of Monetarism and Neoclassical economics. We may add Supply-Side to the Yale University professor's progeny thanks to his vision of money as an inherently international issue. Fisher's articulation of a world economy lead by a Federal Reserve managing credit and inflation/deflation through the study of price indexes and directing nations adhering to a gold exchange standard sounds a good bit like the Supply-Side idea of using commodity indexes including gold as the major gauge of inflation.
If there are weaknesses in Fisher's teachings they might be classified under "Fed Worship" and "Scientism." The Federal Reserve creates an inflationary bias in the world's monetary system, Fisher rightly says. Consider this (p. 133): "This power (managing credit), rightly used, makes the Federal Reserve System the greatest public service institution in the world." Now consider the reverse of that. Fisher was forced to do so by the Great Depression that began the year after "The Money Illusion" was published. The Jan. 19, 1928 statement by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, which Fisher includes in an appendix of quotations, should be pondered, especially by current-day folk tempted to view the Fed as a fountain of miracles.
Fisher's life and work are examples of how one era's progressives become the conservatives of later ones. The professor's emphasis on dollar stability and his finding that unbalanced government budgets are the leading cause of inflation would get him a chair at any of today's Republican friendly think tanks including the Hoover Institution (named after Fisher's interventionist friend Herbert Hoover). Yet we should remember Fisher was also a prophet of the new world order. During his times the U.S. was taking over world financial leadership from Great Britain. America's Industrial Revolution, began around the time of Fisher's birth, came into full bloom in the Roaring 20s with the start of mass production of automobiles, airplanes, and many other things we take for granted today. Fisher provided a great service by delving the implications of these developments. If I were to assign Fisher's contributions a place in the history of economic thought I would put them high up in the category of "anticipatory conservatism" along side those of his friend Joseph Schumpeter.
Yet "The Money Illusion" left me wondering if Fisher didn't fall into the trap well-encapsulated by F.A. Hayek's phrase "the misuse of knowledge." After all, what are prices? Can they be grouped into indexes that are then used to manage credit and make the monetary unit a deferred standard of payments? What is money? What is economics?
Suppose the naturalists like Hayek's teacher and colleague Ludwig von Mises are right. Does not building a mountain of "scientific" economics, undertaken sagely by Fisher and others with the best of intentions, set us up to fall further and harder than we otherwise would? Fisher's own life and experience with the Great Depression indicate that this may well be the case yet he admirably kept probing and finding new insights including a debt-deflation analysis very relevant to the Great Recession going on as I write this review.
"The Money Illusion" was written before Fisher's "fall," making it interesting on many levels. It is also a very approachable book, written in a worldly, tough-minded style. The title is provocative as are the book's contents. All this reminds us that in word and through deed, Irving Fisher was, above all, a great teacher.

The Birth of Monetarism....

This book represents Fisher's seminal work on money and his recognition as the father of the economic school of Monetarism. In "The Money Illusion" he lays out the nature of money in a modern society and speaks to the false security of gold or any other standard to the "value" of money. He explains clearly the effects of deflation and inflation on currencies and emphasizes the importance of government and their monetary authorities in acting to stabilize their effects through responsible governance of the currency.

Fisher explains and advocates for the integration of the banking system into the Federal Reserve System specifically in the US and generally in all economies. He also recognize that the Fed is already acting as the primary counterbalance on the world economy in 1928 presaging Milton Friedman's critique of the Fed's behavior and incompetence in dealing with the Great Depression.

During the discussion on the gold standard Fisher while not rejecting it does illustrate that it will not provide stability and actually will become a limit as the economy outgrows the physical quantities available on the planet. If the currency is to have a gold basis then he advocates that production of gold should be as strongly regulated as the production of currency by governments and not be left in the hands of individuals or corporations.

The work clearly is the culmination of his early career as a neoclassical economist and lays the foundation for both Monetarism and his future work on debt deflation theory. It is a critical read for both neoclassical and heterodox followers of economics.

I Love Fisher's writing style but the topic wasn't broad enough

The money illusion, AKA inflation and currency deflation, has been explained extremely well in this book but it's simply not the most interesting topic that Fisher has written about. He seemed to have to find too many examples to defend his case but it wasn't really necessary. He is a master of writing and explaining these complicated subject matters. This book simply isn't one of my favs of Fisher but it's a short book and the beginning of the book is the most valuable. In summary, well worth your time reading this very good book.
