In Frank Trejo's words

I might be one of the few people who have had an opportunity to meet both the author and the subject of the story. Both Frank Trejo and Dave Medina were at an IMMAF conference in November 2012. As a school owner under the IMMAF, I have met Frank Trejo more often, and as a practicing student of karate, it's hard to go 40 years without having heard of him.
Very few students taking Kenpo Karate know the history behind this martial art.
This story gives the reader a glimpse into the beginnings of American Kenpo. Hearing, (reading), Frank's words the same way he has always said them is refreshing for some of us. Frank believes, as most of us traditionalists do, that the basics is what forms the art. Proper stances and breathing form the very foundation of the style and ultimately it's success.
Thanks to Dave Medina, I can show my students exactly what Frank said to me the last time we actually sat and talked. "Focus on the basics."

Mr Frank captured perfectly!

The book reads like Mr Frank is sitting there having the conversation with you. I especially liked the story of his mother and what she would say to him if he was being bullied. It reminded me of something similar I said to my boys. It was also a nice gesture to have the Mr. Dave's girls add their input into the book. It shows the impact of Mr. Frank through another generation. Thank you, Mr. Dave.

An Authentic Look into Mr. Frank

As a huge fan of Mr. Frank Trejo, I appreciate the way Medina truly captures Trejo's voice in his interview. It really feels like I am hanging out with Mr. Frank listening to him tell stories. It's a fascinating peek into the mind of an amazing man! As a martial artist I find Trejo's words both practical and inspiring. Well done!
