Faith. Trust. Triumph.
“I’m sorry,” the doctor said. “He is permanently and totally blind. There is nothing we can do for him.”
George and Sarah Hingson looked at each other, devastated. Their six-month-old son, Michael was a happy, strawberry blond baby boy, healthy and normal in every way except one. When the Hingsons switched on a light or made silly faces, Michael did not react. Ever. “My best suggestion is that you send him to a home for the blind,” the doctor continued. “He will never be able to do anything for himself.”
Forty-seven years later, a yellow Labrador retriever puppy was born in the whelping unit of Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California. The puppy’s name was Roselle. On September 11, 2001, she saved Michael’s life. This is Roselle’s story too.
―From the Introduction
Every moment in Michael Hingson’s and Roselle’s lives seemed to lead up to this day. When one of four hijacked planes flew into the World Trade Center’s north tower on September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson, a district sales manager for a data protection and network security systems company, was sitting down for a meeting. His guide dog, Roselle, was at his feet. Paired for twenty-one months, man and dog spent that time forging a bond of trust, much like police partners who trust their lives to each other.
Michael couldn’t see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and Roselle. However, Roselle sat calmly beside him. In that moment, Michael chose to trust Roselle’s judgment and not to panic. They were a team.
Thunder Dog is a story that will forever change your spirit and your perspective. It illuminates Hingson’s lifelong determination to achieve parity in a sighted world and how the rare trust between a man and his guide dog can inspire an unshakable faith in each one of us.

Extraordinary Man, Bright and Brave Dog, Inspiring Story
By Douglas Winslow Cooper
Michael Hingson, an extraordinary man, is the subject of this exemplary book, a tribute to his triumph over blindness and to his wonderful guide dog, Roselle, a Golden Retriever - Labrador Retriever mix, who help Michael and his friend David descend 78 floors (20 steps down, landing, turn, 19 steps down) of the North Tower when the World Trade Center was attacked by Muslim extremists September 11, 2001.
Micheal's background is integrated into the story of his flight from the Tower. He was raised by parents who made few concessions to his blindness. For example, though totally blind, he was allowed to bicycle freely in his small California town of Palmdale. He had a panoply of hobbies. He went on through conventional high school and on to University of California at irvine, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in physics.
Michael's wife, paraplegic from birth, is another impressive person in this story. Theirs is a marriage to admire.
As over a thousand other reviewers have attested here, this is an inspiring book, well worth reading.
Congratulations, too, to Michael's co-author...you've collaborated to write a wonderful testament to human and canine courage.

A powerful story and an education about service dogs
By C. Lemanski
Thunder Dog is the story of Michael Hingson and his service dog, Roselle, surviving the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. But it's also about what it means to grow up blind in a world full of sight, and what it takes to make a good service dog.
Roselle's story is powerful and compelling. While Hingson's writing style may not be perfect, he tells the details as he remembers them. Some other reviewers say the story isn't so much about the dog. Ok - that's true, to an extent. But as the author himself states, you have to understand his life story to know how he came to be in the twin towers that day; and then you better appreciate how the events unfolded around him. You can practically feel yourself in the tower stairwell with him as his dog helps guide him - and others - out of the building.
Most people don't know how much time, effort, and training it takes to make a service dog, and the percentage of dogs that make it successfully through training. This book helps people appreciate service dogs more, not just for their unselfish behavior in times of crisis, but their day-to-day support of those who need them most. Hopefully, it also gets people to understand that service dogs are not so much "pets" as they are "working dogs", constantly on-call for their beloved owners.

A Man and His Very Special Dog
By Jo Klarich
Dual story--a man, Michael Hingson and a dog, Roselle. In fact several dogs that served a man who was blind from birth. The man's story is one of a child who was raised to "do everything" like ride a bicycle, drive a car (with supervision), and tackle a difficult college program leading to a degree in physics. Much of his story was much the same as described by Tom Sullivans in "If You Could See What I Hear".
As for the dogs story, this is one of the best descriptions I have read about the raising and training of Guide Dogs. So many of the dogs qualify because of their personalities and eager willingness to do their job. Roselle helped not only Michael down 78 flights of steps in the World Trade Center tower, she also helped many others with her calmness and dedication. Even after the collapse of the tower, she helped guide on the dusty street and used her instincts to lead several to safety.
There is now a Roselle's Dream Foundation the goal of which is to "help today's blind children and adults have access to the technology the need to excel in school and at work and to live out their dreams".
