Out of Albania-"A True Account of a WWII Underground Rescue Mission"

I started reading my copy thinking I would read a little and go to sleep. I found myself there with the crew confused, cold and wondering who to trust. I put it down several times to go to sleep but would end up back in the mountains treking along or hiding in the bush. Mr. Abbott told the story of their escape in such a simply way, you felt a connection to them as people not just characters. I just couldn't leave them out there in the cold and about 3A.M. I finished with the book. It surprised me that I couldn't just read a little because going into the book I knew more than most about the end of the story.
There are millions of stories out there, disappearing rapidly, never having their place in history. This story too could easily have been silently gone.
Thankfully, Mr Abbott wrote his story down. I'm glad through so many small miracles, helpful people and a labor of love by Clint that this book is in the hands of all of us. We all owe that generation so much for what they so willing sacrificed.

Out of Albania

Amazing story of courage and determination. My husband's uncle was one of the Tech Sergeants in this book. TSgt John (Johnny) P. Wolf. As a boy my husband heard many of the events in this book and so it has a special meaning to us. Thanks to Lawrence Abbott for putting the details down on paper while the events were fresh in his mind at the end of WWII and to Clinton Abbott his son for publishing this outstanding book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in American history.

Thrilling WWII Rescue Story

I have known this story for many years, and this book finally tells it from the viewpoint of the enlisted man. In 1943 a plane headed to Italy with 13 army nurses and 13 army medics crash landed in German-occupied Albania. The author is one of the medics, who began writing notes of their experience while walking through the mountains, trying to get to the coastline to be rescued. Winter snow and rain and little food are the overwhelming problems they endured for 2 months, with the help of some local residents, before meeting with a few British soldiers who notified the Americans of their plight. Three nurses were left behind by mistake and finally found a way to be rescued after 5 months. I was able to interview a few of the these survivors for my book, NO TIME FOR FEAR, VOICES OF AMERICAN MILITARY NURSES IN WORLD WAR II. Readers will find the bravery, fortitude and humor of the author hard to forget. The notes written during and after the experience were found by the author's son, and finally put into book form for us all to read.
